It’s the most wonderful time of the year. That’s right, the holiday season is upon us. With the holidays come plenty of celebrations and festivities that will undoubtedly keep you busy right up until the New Year. Between the office parties, family gatherings and holiday shopping, there are plenty of activities that will be competing for our time. But if your plans call for a little holiday magic on the theater stage (and they should), Seattle has no shortage of productions that will immediately put you in the holiday spirit.

Once you hear the musical strains of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” you know the holidays have arrived. And there’s no better way to start the season off than with the dancers from the Pacific Northwest Ballet performing George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker.” Be one of the first people to see this particular production as PNB features delightful new set designs this year. With 48 dancers bounding across the stage to a live score by the PNB Orchestra, you can’t go wrong.

This night of song, dance and merriment always brings down the house at Benaroya Hall. Just after Thanksgiving, The Seattle Men’s Chorus will take the stage to perform Home for the Holidays. Dennis Coleman, SMC’s Artistic Director since 1981, will be raising the baton for the last time, so don’t miss your chance to hear and see the magic he has created with SMC. Like other audience members you’ll find yourself laughing, tapping your feet and singing the classic holiday carols long after the curtain has come down on the final number.

If the impending holiday season has you feeling a bit like Ebenezer Scrooge, then you’ll want to make your way to ACT Theatre. That’s right, ACT Theatre is back once again with their ever popular take on the Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.” This chestnut of a holiday tale can’t be beat. And if you are caught in the true holiday spirit of giving ,you can contribute to the food drive hosted by ACT throughout its run of “A Christmas Carol” to benefit the Pike Place Market Food Bank.

Sometimes a person needs a special angel to come around and remind them their life is indeed worth living. That’s certainly the case with George Bailey and ArtsWest Theatre’s production of “Wonderful Life” is a heartwarming tale that deserves to be at the top of your list for holiday events this year. Although this Capra classic is being told through one person, you would swear that the whole town of Bedford Falls is up on stage celebrating George’s return. You’re guaranteed to leave the theater with a renewed sense of hope.
